How is a post's reach calculated?
Reach describes how many individual people see a post – unlike impressions, which also count repeat views by the same person. Part of the reach comes from your existing follower base, another part from discovery surfaces like Explore, For You or recommendations. How large that second share is depends heavily on the engagement rate: posts with above-average interaction get shown to more people by the algorithm. On TikTok, reach can therefore exceed the follower count by a multiple, while on Instagram and YouTube the extra effect is usually more moderate.
